Vitamin D is essential for promoting the absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus and the normal calcification of the skeleton. It maintains the neuromuscular function and various other cellular processes, including the immune system and insulin production. Additionally, several cross-sectional studies have associated lower vitamin D status with a decreased lung function. Vitamin D is produced in skin upon exposure to UVB radiation from the sun or from limited dietary sources. Therefore people living in polluted areas with a limited exposure to sunlight should take more vitamin D supplements.
